About me

A

Hello and welcome to my tiny corner of the digital world. My name is Gavin.

For over 15 years, I worked in journalism, television and the creative industries, with a modest specialism in hostile, remote and sensitive stories and environments, most frequently for BBC News covering major global events. As a freelance, I also worked on number of international television series, in corporate and government communications, and as a journalism and media trainer. A link to my previous professional life can be found here.

A few years ago I returned to academia in an attempt to combine my academic and professional worlds, and now work in the broad field of psychological research. I have a particular interest in the mitigation and treatment of psychological trauma, surviving and thriving in extremis, and the translation of research into applied clinical and policy work.

This site is a place for me to explore and develop my own writing and interests when I can, outside of my daily work.

I hold a MA(Hons) in Psychology from The University of Edinburgh and a MSc in War & Psychiatry from the IoPPN at King’s College London. I also have a MA in Television Production from (the then) University College Falmouth. I am a member of the British Psychological Society, as well as the UK Psychological Trauma Society and the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, both for whom I also contribute articles and communication outreach work.
