I am an applied academic psychologist focusing on how individuals survive and thrive in extremis, reactions to stress and potentially traumatic experiences, and how best to reach and treat hard to reach and at risk populations.  My current research focuses on those who have served in the Armed Forces, with findings and methodology applied to other occupational groups.  I have a strong interest in knowledge mobilisation (KMb) and the translation of research into applied clinical and policy work that can make a discernible positive difference.

For almost two decades, I worked in journalism, television and the creative industries, with a modest specialism in hostile, remote and sensitive stories and environments, most frequently for BBC News. In addition, my work included a number of international television series, corporate and government communications, and as an educator.  Academically, I hold degrees from The University of Edinburgh, (the former) University College Falmouth, and King’s College London.  I am a board member of the UK Psychological Trauma Society, a member of the British Psychological Society and the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
